adj1920 's review for:
The Bad Weather Friend
by Dean Koontz
I hate to say it, because I know how much goes into writing a book- but this was not good. I've never read anything by Dean Koontz, but I took on chance on this from my Amazon Prime First Reads for January. I loved the concept of a superpowered entity who fights, John Wick-style, on behalf of the folks who are too pure for this world! Technically, that is what happened. But the plot is written like a child's fable. The third person omniscient voice includes direct asides from an unnamed narrator to the reader. In some books, this adds some levity. But the overall tone of the book is so whimsical that this just makes any semblance of substance float away. There are references to different little things throughout the book that build out its world. But they aren't expounded upon in any meaningful way. Ultimately this feels like a cross between a short story that wore out its welcome, and an outline for a much more interesting version of this book.
