Charnel House by Graham Masterton

4.0

My first experience of Graham Masterton is a good one. Aside from the casual racism of the seventies, I have no major qualms with this short and spooky read. Classic 'monster house' horror rears its head in Charnel House, with a strong start and a climactic finish that sneaks up on the reader. The narrative itself is relatively simple and formulaic, but I'm not opposed since it works just fine. My biggest issue plotwise is how the characters mostly just accept what is happening fairly early on: no hysteria or particular skepticism, which seemed pretty unrealistic to me. But hey, it's a demonic tale, who cares about realism? Interesting take on native mythology and definitely unafraid of gore.
