Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe
4.0

First things first, thoughts on the book - I liked it! The writing was great, each character appeared distinct, and it was easy to follow their stories. There are a lot of characters whose outcome I was emotionally invested in and I’m glad the author wrote about each one to bring their stories to a satisfactory conclusion. There were some slower parts but overall the story moved at a pace to keep my attention. I also liked the christian and moral aspects the author brought to the story. In many ways, she was holding up a mirror to the southern whites to reveal their hypocrisy, and that was very poignant. I can see why this book was very popular and controversial in its day.

The second thing I wanted to address was the character Uncle Tom. Today, we know an Uncle Tom to be a black person who disregards or puts down people of their own race for the approval of white people. But reading the book, that is not at all who the Uncle Tom character is. So I read up on it to understand where the mischaracterization came from and apparently when this book was adapted for the stage, they changed the story to make the Uncle Tom character to be more minstrel (as that characterization of black people is what was most popular and selling back in the day). What a disgrace! But overall, I’m glad I read this book and understand more of where this term comes from - 4 stars!
