Touch by Adania Shibli
5.0
dark emotional mysterious fast-paced

Much like Minor Detail, Shibli is concerned with the the intricacies of minor details, repetition, and what can be understood in what is left off the page, of what is relegated to the realm of the sensory and the reflective. Only brief mentions of Palestine, as it relates to the Sabra and Shatila massacre, as well as the inability to use/mention the word/name Palestine. It’s a Palestinian text without being about Palestine; or put differently, not interested in having to be easily grasped as Palestinian. It’s a work about aesthetics, about sensory details, about sequencing, and breaking readerly expectations.
