I am not a chess person, and this book really proved it; however, that realization didn't take away from the enjoyment of the story at all. The chess scenes were intense! I was quite invested in her professional journey and successes. I was quite uncomfortable with the excessive drug and alcohol use, and especially so the sexual coercion scene when she was a child (sorry if anyone feels these are spoilers, but I feel like trigger warnings are necessary). I didn't care too much for the narration- something about her inflection and the way she voiced the characters just bristled me a bit. I probably would have preferred visually reading it, but the story was good enough that I continually looked forward to listening more and the irks weren't as noticeable as I got further invested in the story.
Graphic: Addiction, Alcoholism, Drug abuse, Drug use, Sexual assault, Alcohol
Moderate: Child abuse, Cursing, Death, Death of parent
