This really was a lovely book, well done and definitely pulls you all the way into it from the start. You fall in love with the characters and get your heart broken when they get hurt.

I can see though why people were upset that it was written by a white woman, why that caused such controversy.  It makes you question the credibility behind the story, if the middle class, distant from the situation main character who has always seen herself as outside of the situation of migrants might be a little too on the nose.

It makes me question how much of it is accurate, or just pieced together from the news. And how it paints Mexico in a way that doesn’t seem fair for someone who isn’t from there to paint it.
