Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. Andrews
4.0

I really enjoyed the premise of the book with the quest to bring back the Olympus's powers, the traveling around to all the famous Greek myths, and seeing Claire's portrayal of the Gods was really delightful. She really made the characters feel real, with their complicated emotions towards one another and their motivations for going on the quest. They have their prejudices against each other, but learn that people and Gods can always subvert their narratives, but at the same time be exactly as expected.

Daphne was very great to read, at first her stubbornness and arrogance was annoying, but as the journey progresses she changes and grows as a character, and I really enjoyed reading that change. She learned more about the world and about other people, places, and Gods, but never loses that innate snarkiness that she had from the beginning. She goes on this taxing journey, both physically and emotionally, but it never breaks her, she is never swayed from the path she has to travel.

Well, almost never, cause Apollo be making it hard for her. He's everything you imagine him to be, charming, beautiful, arrogant, and very dangerous. The Gods are also very well written as characters, they have otherworldly abilities but they are never sugarcoated. They, more often than not, bring humans to their ruin. And now they must suffer the consequences of their own actions. I loved Apollo and Daphne's banter, it was super witty and snarky which just enough bite to give you that begrudged traveling companion feelings.

I thought the romance was done really well with the initial reluctant enemies to lovers troupe, but that Daphne subverts that ending by rejecting Apollo at the end. Especially her reason for rejecting him as she loved the human side of him with his weaknesses and flaws, but hates the God side of him where he can destroy nations over a rejection. Daphne's emotional growth was the most interesting to read because she is so head strong she is very set in her decisions, but not doesn't mean that following through on those decisions don't hurt.

So while I really liked this book, I have to say that I am super over the whole troupe of Ares always being the bad guy. Yes he's the God of war, but that doesn't negate all the other Gods and Goddess who've done horrible things to ancient Greece nor does it mean that he has to be antagonist to every story. Also the fact that Apollo is always the main God character who goes on the journey, over it. Let's look at new characters!
