The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas
Did not finish book. Stopped at 58%.
The thing about this book is that it’s so repetitive that I could not get through it.
We spend a lot of time reading Lina’s inner monologue, and Lina is not an interesting person. She has very few thoughts. The majority of them are “Aaron is so TALL and so HOT. I shouldn’t think about him that way though!” The other part of her thoughts is “I should stop saying this lie because if my family finds out they’ll think I’m desperate.” You add to her urge to lie her innate desire to be stubborn about anything and everything… And I just had enough of her nonsense. I could not do it anymore.
Another major issue I have with the book is that…Aaron does a 180° in the story. He starts out one way, and by the halfway point he turns into a completely different person. It just gave me whiplash. Why would the author do this? Plus, the man clearly only has eyes for Lina…but to the point that he starts seeming creepy. He knows so much about Lina, but Lina doesn’t know shit about him. And as the novel progresses that just seems more and more bizarre.
Speaking of the dynamics between Lina and Aaron…. The two had ZERO chemistry. I’ve heard the smut in here is good (I didn’t get to that point), but everything leading up to it has absolutely NO tension. There is nothing here that makes me believe their relationship or make me want them to get together. All I feel is confusion as to how the two could possibly “fall” for each other. Especially since Aaron clearly has redeeming qualities, but Lina has none.
Anyway. At the end of the day, I’m glad my friend DNFed this, so I felt comfortable DNFing it as well. She freed me from this prison.
