I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

5.0

I appreciate the audio listener copy of this audiobook from Libro.FM

This is, as many reviews note, a truly powerful memoir. I respect the writing, the openness, and the use of humor in places (I use humor to cope too) and mostly I sincerely value a memoir that offers a presentation of eating disorders that shows the realness of the experience, the challenges of treatment and recovery, and does so without glamorizing thinness or eating disorders and never spends time on inadvertently being a "how to have an eating disorder" guide (early eating disorder memoirs have done this; note I offer insights here as a lecturer who teaches on body image and related topics and as a researcher/clinical interviewer who has worked in this field but without personal history of these struggles).

This book is rewarding for the struggles shared, the insights it offers into trauma and harmful parenting, and for the insightful writing on mental health and relationships. There is a lot to unpack and talk about in this memoir.
