Evil Eye by Etaf Rum

5.0

Wow wow wow wow wow. I read this whole book today. I’ve never seen such a clear-eyed depiction of intergenerational trauma. Rum masterfully draws a line from the Nakba in Palestine to the next generation’s trauma and how it affected all of their relationships, to the complex ptsd that their children have to learn to deal with as adults. As we face this next, horrible chapter in genocide in Palestine, Rum warns of the long-lasting impact it will have on Palestinians both in Palestine and in diaspora.

EVIL EYE also gives hope for addressing this kind of trauma. We follow Yara as she encounters therapy for the first time, and as she tries out healing practices like journaling and naming emotions. This difficult work is given the respect it deserves, and it’s clear from the beginning that Yara will find a way to break her curse.
