I really enjoyed reading this book! Wilkerson’s writing sucks you in right away, and the short chapters keep it fast paced. Some chapters were just a single page, and I wish we had gotten more time with specific moments.
This book spans centuries and has a constantly rotating POV. I’ve seen many reviews dissatisfied with that structure, but I think it’s important to go into this book expecting more of a Homegoing approach than an in-depth multigenerational drama. The emphasis was more on telling a larger story with many layers, rather than diving into a few characters more deeply.
Like with Black Cake, there were a few moments that felt too convenient to me, but overall a solid and engrossing read.
