I don't have a problem with protagonists who make different choices from an Established Good (like the Charter) and I really like when the Established Good is brought into question in the first place. My main problem with this book was that Clariel spent the first 3/4 of the book super whiny: "I just want to live in the forest." Guh. There are more important things happening, and she literally says that she couldn't care less. I was so disappointed by her character.

I also disliked the pacing. The last 1/4 of the book was exciting and felt like the other books, but the first 1/2 was so boring and unimportant to the overall goals of the book. Yes, I know I'm missing a 1/4, so here it is: the 3rd quarter was well done, and would have been great if it had been the first 1/4. Basically, the first bit should have been very condensed and the last bit extended.

I wish I had loved this book.
