Romancing Mister Bridgerton
by Julia Quinn
There's too much first draft nonsense going on. This needed like three more passes because if you think about any section too hard, you'll find easily remediable plot holes or just nuisances. This book should have come before Benedict's because the stakes are just so low after Sophie having to deal with exile or death. It's the epitome of rich people problems. I just didn't care. Colin has no personality until suddenly he's a macho man who's in control of everything except his temper. For every good trait that Julia tries to give him, she adds five red flags. I will say I like Penelope being older because that makes her more rational. I totally see why people self-insert as her but like they need to aim higher. She never gets over putting Colin on a pedestal even though she says she does. It's always nice when she stands up for herself, but it doesn't happen enough and she almost always immediately backs down, especially if she's speaking to Colin. They are the equivalent of the high school sweethearts that think they're perfect for each other but are actually clearly toxic to everybody else. For the most part, the show did a better job.
