Speedy summary: Claudia decides to run away with her younger brother and hide out at the Met in New York. She becomes very interested in a mysterious statue.
Thoughts: First, a long personal story. Skip to the stars if you aren't interested. I grew up in a small town with a small school library that did not have this book. In the third grade, my teacher had a big book shelf in her classroom you could borrow books from, BUT she had like six books on her desk that were her favorites that you could not borrow. So rude. This was one of them. And I was so obsessed with it. The cover was so fun and the title so interesting and it had that fancy newbery medal on it (that meant it HAD to be extra good in my third grade mind). So fast forward to like a year ago when I found it for 50 cents at a garage sale and it all came flooding back :P Even though I had two other wonderful sounding picks for this year (The Chosen and Picnic and Hanging Rock), I gave in to my third grade desire :P
******* So! Was it worth it? Yes. I thought this book was lovely. I laughed out loud multiple times. Channeling my third grade self, I really connected with Claudia, her oldest child sense of injustice, her desire to do something and have impact, to change and escape monotony. I totally would have adored this book then and even though it is a young readers chapter book, I still loved it. Excited to read it with my little ones when they get older :)
