Runaways, Vol. 8: Dead End Kids by Joss Whedon, Michael Ryan

4.0

The best volume so far! I don't know any of the ins and outs of it, but Dead End Kids is written and drawn by a completely different team to the previous volumes, and the volumes after, but somehow manages to give the most depth and interest to the characters and their shenanigans.

I really enjoyed the time travel storyline, the characters interacted with each other as you would expect them to (I accidently read volume 9 before this, and it's such a regression in terms of character building, as if none of the important stuff has happened over the previous 8 volumes)

The art style was more mature - again this is the only volume with this art style, but I thought it suited the story well. The whole thing felt a bit more mature, from the art to the story to the fight scenes and showing bloody unfortunate outcomes.

The main twist was a really clever choice, it's just a shame that the arc didn't progress from here, and instead got rebooted (can it be called a reboot when it was released straight away?)
