Endgame: The Calling by James Frey, Nils Johnson-Shelton
3.0

Giving this 3 stars is being very generous. There is so much to dislike about this book. It's been called a knockoff of the Hunger Games, but really its not. If you crossed [b:His Dark Materials|18116|His Dark Materials (His Dark Materials #1-3)|Philip Pullman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1438619021s/18116.jpg|1943518] with that show Ancient Aliens and throw in a little Mortal Kombat then you would have it. (Its the end of the world as we know it kept playing in my head as I read this book)

The premise is that there are 12 lines of humanity that have trained for generations to fight each other and collect the keys to save the world. So how after a several millennia are there any true bloodlines? And why choose children to fight the fight? This aspect of the story was rather dark. Glamorizing kids killing kids as well as innocent people is outside my threshold as ok. I know its fiction and I'm not about censorship, but its out of my comfort zone.

The book is written from alternating points of view of the various players. And while there are different personalities in the characters, they just aren't that believable. Also, throughout the book there were weird references to numbers. Measurements of time and length were carried out to several decimal places. No one thinks of measurements like that.

Overall, I didn't care for it and I don't think I will be continuing this series. I gave it 3 stars because it did hold my attention and was a page turner. There was plenty of action but it takes more than that to make a good read.
