Insurrection by Robyn Young

3.0

I was torn between giving this three or four stars but I went for three in the end. The author brings the Middle Ages to life well and her descriptions, particularly of battles, are very vivid. The complex family relationships of many of the characters and the divided loyalties of many of the Scottish nobles with lands in England are also well done. The author makes particularly imaginative use of Edward I's fascination with the Arthurian legends as part of his motivation for the conquest of England and Scotland. My problem with the book was that there are areas where it sags a bit, bogged down in the politics, and the main character never really came alive for me. His struggles were described to me but I never felt them and his relationships with other people didn't come alive.
