The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

I loved everything about this book! Except Carter, but I’ll get into that. When I was suggested to read this book- I was told it’s an “80’s horror flick in book form” and boy, they weren’t lying. The style, language, pop culture references and even their beliefs are a bright, flashing neon sign saying “I’m from the last two decades of the 1900s!”. The book was fast paced and quick to suck me in. I loved how the character group was what I would call “disappointingly realistic” in that you usually expect people to just jump on board and believe, no matter how crazy or unstable you sound but that isn’t exactly what happened here. The changes in vampire lore makes this book fresh and exciting- setting “vampires” up in a way I have never heard someone be close to. The unique quality of the vampire species adds a lot of appeal to this book.

Patricia is a truly diverse character. The writer lets you inside her mind and motivations, fears and frustrations. I wish she had noticed Carter’s gaslighting and manipulation earlier on. Though, she was kind of naive in more than one way. Like repeatedly trusting her friends, knowing they had already turned on her once. Didn’t bother to bring a flashlight or camera when searching James’ house (which would have given her proof without having to have physical items).

Carter: I freaking LOATHE carter. As a medical professional, we hate doctors like him. Gaslighting, speaking over and threatening your “patients”. To cross that line where you use your place in the medical field to gaslight and manipulate your wife into being controlled- even writing her prescriptions, thus drugging her. I can’t stand Carter and I kind of wish they had let James Harris kill him off before the main battle started.

Mrs. Greene was such a beautiful character. So strong, passionate and brave. Mrs. Greene is probably my favorite character in this book. She seemed so sweet and pure, risking herself to try and save Mrs. Mary, helping hunt down her neighborhoods missing children, helping get them in the house, being there for Patricia when everyone else wouldn’t believe her, fighting James, dismembering him, and finally cleaning up behind them. Mrs. Greene is just made of steel and I love her!

I genuinely enjoyed this book and it will probably wind up being a reread in the future. I would also suggest this to others. It 100% deserve the hype it receives and then sum!
