Cutting School: The Segrenomics of American Education
by Noliwe Rooks
wow! it is dangerous to assign me books for my courses because i literally have a final this week that i have not studied for because i spent all my time just reading and vibing with this book instead.
This book is about the privatization of the education "industry," and how entrepreneurs take advantage of underperforming schools in black and latino communities to make large profits instead of devoting time and resources to desegregating schools which is the one thing that has been studied and proven to improve student performance in these communities. Also too, most of these new and innovative techniques have been implemented without consulting the students, teachers, and parents that live in these communities.
The chapter about Wendy Kopp and Teach for America was personally really tea for me. This is because Kopp went to Princeton and literally designed the methodology for Teach for America as her senior thesis which is actually so insane to think about as I sit here writing this review as a way to procrastinate writing mine. Further her son is in the year younger than me and quite the character! which was just like lol.
Regardless, Rooks is just a great writer, thinker, and storyteller. I feel like this book is essential reading material for anyone interested in the american education system.
