How to Raise a Feminist Son: Motherhood, Masculinity, and the Making of My Family by Sonora Jha

4.0

This was a good book, suitable not only for parents of boys but for all parents, although the end-of-chapter advice ranged from common sense ideas we've all heard before (co-view media with your kids) to impractical ("Make sure your school-going boy has strong feminist girls and LGBTQ kids among his friends." Lovely ideal, and when they're younger it's easier to choose the type of people they're around, but as they get older it seems harder to control what friends your son has) to better and more practical ("call in" your boys instead of calling them out, allowing them to recognize that making mistakes is part of growing) to a bit too broad in scope ("Work to topple militaristic, toxic masculine political and social structures." Sure, but how?)

Still, a very worthwhile read, full of humor, relevant anecdotes, and heart.
