WHY is Le Guin so hit or miss for me? Sometimes I read her stuff and it's transcendent. Sometimes I read it and it's a slog. Unfortunately, this was the latter. I wasn't invested in these characters or the central relationship, and as a result I didn't care about the amorphous war happening around them. The only positive thing I can say is that it's as well-written as any Le Guin and hopefully will build on my appreciation of this world when I read further stories in this universe.
