Gods of Want: Stories by K-Ming Chang
3.75
slow-paced

This was the April book for a queer literature bookclub I'm a part of.

The first section, Mothers, was amazing. So beautifully written, stories of people and relationships. I didn't get much into the Myths section. I kept getting pulled back to reality, unable to maintain the fantasy element in my head. I can read speculative fiction/fantasy, but the internal logic of these fantasy worlds didn't gel in my head. Moths combines these elements more (the relationships and the fantastical). It definitely pulled it off better than Myths

I'm torn on what to think of it as a cohesive unit. Short stories usually aren't my vibe. Mothers made me optimistic that this would be Afterparties-level good. But the rest of it doesn't meet that standard. There are a couple stories that flat out weirded me out / made me a bit uncomfortable in its content. I feel like I can't give something 4+ stars when there are constituent parts I find off like that. I'd suggest sections or stories in this to people, but not the collection itself.
