Spell Bound
by Rachel Hawkins
After reading the final book in this trilogy I can safely say that it started with a bang a then slowly went downhill. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy reading this series, I really did, but the more I read the more the initial love of this series wore off and the problems started becoming more obvious.
I still love the characters, especially the characters that had lots of effort put into making sure they weren't just there when the plot demanded them but rather by their own motivations. I loved the depiction of Sophie's friendship with Jenna, it's one of the best relationships in the whole series.
I loved the beginning story line about Sophie's mother, a previously pretty boring character and for the most part I liked the pacing of the plot, but I didn't like the ending. It felt rushed, like little thought had gone into it and from the moment Sophie got her powers back everything just came very easily for the characters. Leaving me with feelings that their victory was undeserved.
I didn't understand the purpose for the three or so Alice in Wonderland quotes, what were these meant to make readers think about? A weird thing to add in the final book of a trilogy in my opinion.
I lost interest in the romance of this story. For a "love triangle" Cal was never really considered an option for Sophie and it was pretty clear the whole way through she would end up with Archer which didn't sit right with me. Their relationship was pretty unstable and debatably toxic whereas Cal was continuously a character who did no wrong yet SOphie pretty much ignored him unless he was her only option. (I am perhaps a little biased here because by the end I completely hated Archer and wanted Sophie to be with Cal...)
Am I glad I read this book? Yeah, I guess... but only because I wanted to know what happened. Now that I do know what happens, I'm pretty underwhelmed. The writers passion in this series seemed to die about half way through the second book. The first book will remain as a book I thoroughly enjoyed but I don't think I will be re-reading this series any time soon...
