Skip Beat!, Vol. 17 by Yoshiki Nakamura
4.0
Volume 16 finishes off with a syrupy sweet moment where Kyoko holds Ren's head in her lap while he tries to rest. Ren is in lover-boy heaven while Kyoko is totally clueless - thinks she's doing Ren a favor to help him sleep - although I think her subconscious clearly is attracted to him too. Volume 17 starts off with a funny scene where Mr. Yashiro (Ren's manager) is giving him relationship advice. Ren needs to be a man and go after her. Ren responds, "She'd kill me on the spot."
I think the story arc with Reino and Kyoko is just about over. Thank goodness. It becomes clear in this volume that Reino isn't just a normal guy. He's a psychic - as the mangaka puts it - but I think of him more as a psychic vampire. Able to sense and manipulate emotions and presence. Reino gets in Kyoko's face again, but this time Ren is here to save her. Although not before Kyoko tries to ward off Reino's power with her enchanted stone Corn (insert massive eye roll here).
Reino is able to sense that Ren gave Corn to Kyoko long ago and that Ren is not the guy he pretends to be as a celebrity. So now we do know that Ren was the one who gave Corn to Kyoko. We've seen hints of that before. Kyoko sincerely believes that a fairy prince came down to give it to her. How a 16 year old girl believes this is beyond me. It's one of the sillier plot lines.
The volume ends with a new Love Me assignment. Kyoko has to assist Koo, the actor who played the original Katsuki (the role Ren now plays in the remake). Despite being a grown man, he is a total brat. The volume ends with his treating Kyoko like a slave and rejecting everything she does. Interesting to see where this goes.
