House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III
2.0

This book was a bit of a rollercoaster ride for me. I was turned off at first by some of the dialogue, how the foreign speakers’ English was written, and what I felt were inconsistencies that stopped me fully buying in to the characters. Also, I didn’t really like anyone. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to continue but the story unfolded at a pace that worked to get me interested in the premise: two people at an impasse, neither particularly at fault, with pretty high stakes. How would this be resolved? I wanted to know. But as the conflict escalated it started getting too farfetched for me to go along with. By now two-thirds in, I went ahead and finished it but it never recovered. Also, by the end I was thinking, If I see the word “fog” one more time…(and then I did, of course, several more times).
