The Haunting of Hill House was subtle at times in its horror, but it never felt anticlimactic to me in the way that this book did. It captivated me, whereas We Have Always Lived in the Castle was a lacklustre performance to say it mildly. The characters were weird and interesting enough to keep me going to the end, but it isn’t a frightening tale, nor really, a mysterious one.
