This was a solid thriller! I was pleasantly surprised to find myself unable to guess the reveal before it happened. It felt like a unique take on a thriller and it set itself apart from other books in the genre. I am definitely intrigued by Jeneva Rose’s writing and would love to read another one of her books!

This book did have a little bit of a slow start, but I did appreciate the short chapters that kept me wanting to keep reading and kept me hooked on the story. I felt as though Jeneva did a good job building up the story and utilizing the home videos to give us more insight into the past and what happened to this family. I absolutely loved that element of the book — it was my favorite part of the premise.

The characters in this book were definitely kind of the worst people. For most of the story, it is extremely hard to like literally any of them, and you find yourself kind of hating this family. However, by the end of the book and once you learn the truth, everything makes perfect sense. The audience is able to understand why this family ended up in the state that they were in, you are able to see all of the demons that each of them fought, and you understand why each of them made the choices that they did. It really is a complicated relationship to have with the characters, but by the end of the book, I loved both Nicole and Beth especially.

There were definitely a couple parts of the plot, specifically surrounding Brian and his first choice to hide the truth from Laura, a bit questionable. However, I can understand why he would want to protect Laura from knowing the actual truth, and why he did what he did. It does seem very true to his character, and again by the end, I was able to grasp this part of the plot easier.

What could have been better:
😍something to help the audience connect with and like the main characters earlier on in the story?
✍🏽less inspirational quotes inserted into the chapters. It felt like there were a lot of lines that were trying to teach life lessons. They ultimately interrupted my flow of reading.

Overall, I had a fun time reading this book and it was definitely hard to stop reading whenever I picked it up. It was refreshing to read a different type of thriller novel that truly shocked me and had a reveal I would have never guessed. Jeneva does an incredible job keeping you on the edge of your seat and delivering exceptional twists. I rate this book 4/5 stars! 🌟
