Bury Your Dead
by Louise Penny
The first of Louise Penny's books for me, I was extremely impressed. Chosen as my city's "One Community, One Book" selection for 2011, I made an effort to read it...and was hooked. Penny has created a complex mystery that sees Armand Gamache, the Chief Inspector of a special unit within Quebec, recovering from a terrorist attack--a story that is never fully realized until the last chapter. While staying at a friend's home within Quebec City, Gamache is exposed to a murder that involves the reputation of the province's hero and founder, Samuel de Champlain. At the same time, another murder is re-examined by a co-worker in the north of Quebec. Penny effortlessly creates an amazing story...one that kept this reader engrossed until the final page. Pre-Confederation Canadian history and separatist politics take centre-stage here, as well as clever revelations of suspects and perpetrators. Highly recommended.
