Room by Emma Donoghue

This was really good. Once you get used to the five year old narrator then it's a really interesting perspective to think about.

Also, am I an awful person for thinking that Jack is gonna have one hell of a college application essay when the time comes?? That was my first thought after he escaped.

Born in captivity, Jack knows nothing about the real world as it exists outside of their 11x11 room. His mother has him believe that what happens on the TV is make believe because the alternative is to let him know he is also prisoner of Old Nick.

After coming up with a risky plan, five year old Jack is able to escape and alert the authorities about their situation prompting the rescue of Ma. The rest of the book is Jack learning about the world outside Room and his adjustment to a place larger than he could have ever imagined.
