doomjazzer 's review for:
SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome
by Mary Beard
This is not a book for anyone looking to learn about Roman history afresh, so the title is misleading in a sense, and the structure of the book is also poor as it jumps around the timeline and narrative of Rome.
Yet the book is packed with content, and is well written. Most importantly it's a deconstruction of history and historians, mercilessly poking holes into common myths, theories and constantly reminding you that we really don't know much about anything. The book probably belongs in the tail-end of a Rome book marathon, not the beginning!
