This is a more personal ranking for me. From an objective point of view, Jackson's writing is good and the story flowed well for the most part, but I was extremely uncomfortable throughout my time reading this. I know that's the point, that the grooming, manipulation, abuse, and assaults are intentionally written to brutally impact the reader and make them angry and disgusted for Enchanted and the other girls Korey used and threw away. But it didn't stop me from wanting to chuck the book across the room whenever Korey and Enchanted interacted.

Some of the language used throughout the story really didn't help, either. Such as in chapter 29 when Korey is convincing Enchanted's family to go on tour with him, his assistant, Jessica, says that, "The label is really invested in grooming her." Like, what the actual fuck, Jackson? Could you be any more obvious? This is the worst example, but there are too many instances like this throughout the whole book that feels more mocking than foreshadowing, which Jackson may have intended. Her note at the end shows that she had personal experience that she poured into this work, but I feel as though it would have been better to write this with the maturity and nuance a story like this needed to properly do justice for people like Enchanted.

Overall, I'm very disappointed. I love her earlier works, from Monday's Not Coming to Let Me Hear a Rhyme, but this one and White Smoke aren't as great in my eyes. I really hope The Weight of Blood will be better.
