In the first episode is interesting as you find out just how grumpy Kyoya can be when he is woken up and he sees no benefits from acting pleasant. The next two episodes introduce not only Yasuchika, Hunny’s younger brother (who was seen in the anime), but also Satoshi, Mori’s little brother, who is so cute! He’s is like a mini-Mori who actually talks. I love the way in which Chika and Satoshi have a similar relationship to Hunny and Mori, but it plays out differently because they almost have opposite personality types (Satoshi is very vocal, while Chika is stern and ‘manly’). This episode tells of Hunny’s past and how he came to be like he is in the main story even though he is the future head of the Haninozuka family. The fourth episode was the one with Haruhi ending up in the Zuka Club’s play, despite having no acting, singing or dancing abilities. I enjoyed the fact that you got to see a little more of Ranka, Haruhi’s Dad, but that’s about all this episode has going for it.
There is then an extra episode entitled ‘Hitachiin Family Background’. This mini episode shows how the twins grew up to become the lonely, mischievous boys they are in the main story.
Finally this volume has another episode of Love Egoist at the end, entitled ‘Please, please me'. I was almost more excited about this new episode than I was about all of the Host Club episodes in this volume! I had thought that all of the Love Egoist episodes were going to follow different characters in that world, but this one is set just two months after the episode in Volume 4, following the same characters. This pleased me greatly because I really wanted to find out what happened to them. After 2 months of carrying on as if Sumire had not confessed her love to him, Takashi finally accepts that he cares for her. In this mean time they have possibly both blown their nice facades, letting the other students know how they really are.
I really enjoyed this volume and even though the Host Club stories may have been a bit weaker than in the previous volumes, it was definitely enhanced by the addition of Love Egoist at the end.
