Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi
4.0

Full review on my blog: thejrinklings.wordpress.com

This was a really good read. Of course, that’s no surprise, since it is a Roshani Chokshi novel, but I really enjoyed it. This was my first time reading a Rick Riordan Presents novel too, and it more than lived up to my expectations.

One thing that I really love about reading Riordan books is that I always learn a lot more about different cultures and their deities than I ever have in school. Hindu mythology is so much more complicated than Greek, Roman, Norse, or even Egyptian mythology, but Roshani did a really good job breaking it down in a way that made sense and enhanced the story. Honestly, I think most of the reason it’s so confusing is the names of everything are like fourteen syllables.

A lot of people have trouble getting into middle-grade novels, but honestly, I find it refreshing. I enjoy not having to worry about what kind of junk the author’s going to throw in that I really don’t need to read. The only thing I didn’t appreciate in this book was an ugly jab at our current president that I felt was completely unnecessary and disrespectful.

Even if you don’t usually enjoy reading middle grade, I would recommend Aru Shah and the End of Time to you. It may be geared toward a younger audience, but that doesn’t make it any less action-packed or meaningful. And while Aru may only be in middle school, she still feels and has to work through things that all of us can relate to.

And then there’s the fact that this book is just stinking hilarious. That’s one thing I really love about Riordan books is how funny they can be while still being gripping and tense and absolutely heart-wrenching at times. Case in point: Boo (you’ll get it when you read it).

I’ve received an ARC from NetGalley for Aru Shah and the Song of Death (thanks, you guys!), and I hope to have it read within the next couple days and have a review posted soon after. I’ve read the first few chapters and I’ve already been swept away. Sequels for the win!
