The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson
4.0

Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

The book follows Cussy, a blue woman who is a Pack Librarian. She lives with her coal mining father who is trying to secure her a husband, though she doesn't want one, as the men who would marry a blue women are typically of questionable character and only doing so for the land her Pa has promised.

You learn about all her patrons she delivers to, and get a real nice cross section of the poorest in Kentucky in the 1930s.

The dialogue sometimes seems forced, trying to squeeze context the reader wouldn't know into conversations. Yet the story is very good and the chapters are short. The writing style incorporates the language of Kentucky in the '30s, which really put you into the setting.

The romantic aspect is pretty predictable, but there were also some true surprises in the book. I did feel the ending was a bit rushed. There's a left turn and then a jump-ahead that's not completely satisfying.
