Nightbitch
by Rachel Yoder
Odd experimental fiction with weird pacing and content for the sake of shock value, that likely would’ve been better as a novella. Is it an allegory or magical realism? Who’s to say. It has commentary on the cult-like culture of suburban motherhood, the dilemma women are forced to face when career and motherhood collide, the deliberate weaponized incompetence and mediocrity of some men, and the pressure of societal expectations. In spite of all the things it had to say, the story lasted longer than the plot could really handle, and I struggled to finish it. It’s sardonically strange, and ultimately, I’m not sure how to feel about it. But Nightbitch is just an iconic alter-ego name to take on; feral and unhinged, I love that.
