Immigrants in one's own country juxtaposed with illegal immigration to another - the turmoil, the anger and hatred, and trauma and pathos are all portrayed in this novel. It's quite dark at times with chinks of humor in other places. A thought- provoking read. I give it 3.5 only because it was difficult to read in a lot of parts
