This was fun but felt like a bit of a departure from the vibes of the previous books. The end turns really serious in terms of the political turmoil that had been a minor subplot in the previous books. I really wasn't expecting the ending which is a pretty big cliffhanger in the overarching story of what is happening on Clecania after humans arrived.

I'm not sure if I could call it a slow burn or just a really slow start, but it took about the first 100 pages before Meg and Maxu even interacted for the first time. I think too much focus on the book was in getting them to meet for the first time rather than focusing on their growth together as they got to know each other.

The romance itself was really fun to read and I loved the dynamic between Meg and Maxu. They felt pretty developed and had interesting backstories, but I wish there was even more focus on them learning more about each other on page instead of a 2 paragraph "we told each other everything about our lives" fade to black moment. Without that time spent learning about their backgrounds, the book doesn't make me connect to the characters as much as I think I could have.

Some of the side characters were really interesting and added a lot to the overall story. I'm not sure if Tara and Daunet will get a book, but they have a good arc. I cannot wait for Sikthand's book based on all the time spent digging into the history between Sikthand and Maxu. With everything going on with subplots, I think a little bit of Meg and Maxu's story got overwhelmed by the larger events happening politically.
