North Woods by Daniel Mason

I really loved this. It transported me to a quiet grove shaped by humans and time, capturing a scale ranging from the microscopic journey of a fungal spore to the sweeping legacy of a family’s generational curse. Not completely a horror story or a fantasy, but still magical and spiritual. Grand and heartbreaking at times, actually pretty hilarious at others. The evolution of the stories to match the time of each character’s era was very interesting. I got the sense there was a big gap from the 19th century to the 20th century that I wish had been filled with another story, but maybe I just missed something. I also wish there was more emphasis on the perspective of the characters of color. The depiction of the spectrum of mental illness was fascinating and sound. I really loved this book and effectively, I read it in 24 hours, and thought about it for longer.
