Sundial

I’m on a Catriona Ward kick right now and this is my second book by her this month (and I’m close to finishing a third). It was great, but not what I expected. Looking Glass Sound and this book are crazy in very different ways. While I was expecting some supernatural elements, the horror in this book is in the MC’s past and the MC’s current family relationships.
Rob wanted a normal life and a normal family. Unfortunately, she married the wrong guy and one of her daughters is having emotional issues. After a particularly vociferous blow up, Rob decides to take her oldest daughter, Callie, to Sundial, a compound in the middle of the Mojave Desert where she was raised. But when Rob and Callie arrive, Rob is flooded with difficult childhood memories. As Rob grows more detached from reality, Callie is also grappling with some hard truths. She is concerned her mother is losing her mind.
I enjoyed this book even though it was much different than I expected. With Ward’s books, you kind of have to expect the most psychologically fucked up thing could happen. The dynamic between Rob, her twin, and her relationship with her daughters and husband was great. It felt very real. I had no idea where the plot was headed until the writer wanted me to know. It was a quick, fun read.
