TW: Rape

So I started to read this, but couldn’t finish. I’m not familiar with this author or any of her other books. I saw a review that talked about a lesbian couple as the main characters and thought I’d check it out.

However, I quickly learned that this book that is advertised as “dark” and “taboo” isn’t either of those things, it’s just lesbophobic and unnecessarily triggering with no clear plot line.

Rape is not an empowering and character building plot line. especially not when it involves women and most especially lesbian women. It’s an old and overused trope that reeks of misogyny and sexism. I get the theme of power and manipulation, especially when referring to the cult. But it gets old. Find something else that’s considered dark. Rape shouldn’t be romanticized by writing it off as a “dark theme.”

This book doesn’t have a plot, it has sex and then a rape scene, sex and then a rape scene, repeat indefinitely.
This book has a lot of good reviews and I’m honestly not sure why. I like dark themes but this isn’t a dark or taboo book. It isn’t well written and there isn’t any character development or plot building. Shoving a bunch of sex scenes into a book doesn’t make it a romantic story.

Overall I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone, much less another lesbian. I can read lesbian erotica elsewhere that’s better and more attuned and understanding of the L in LGBTQ.
