The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta

5.0

"This is not about
being ready,
it's not even about
being fierce

or fearless,

It's about being free."

We follow Michael's story from childhood to young adulthood when he joins the drag society in university. I'm completely in awe of how Dean Atta used so few works to convey intense feeling throughout The Black Flamingo.
I could barely stop myself from reading into the early hours of the morning and then found myself putting off the last few pages because I didn't want it to end. I borrowed my copy from the library but I think I'll have to buy a copy so I can read the final poem over and over.
