Venetia by Georgette Heyer
3.0
My first Heyer, and though it was fun, it was also a bit too long, and it is as if Heyer tried a bit too hard to make Venetia charming and funny. Her comments were a bit forced at times, as though Heyer was going: "Listen to my charming girl and her shocking nonsense - isn't she delightful?" and we are all meant to go "Yes, indeed, how cool is she?" But, you know, you can't force yourself to be an Elizabeth Bennet - you either are, or you are not.
The story was fine and entertaining, Venetia, Aubrey and Damerel good company and it was nice to see a proper, young woman go against society and pursue her own idea of happiness, instead of allowing herself to be controlled by the agents of society (like her aunt and uncle), who wanted to maintain the strict rules of society. Venetia wants to break the rules, and she has my blessing.
It was a fine book (and the only Heyer at my local library), but I expect I will be able to find another one of her books that will enchant me more than this one. Though I enjoyed the time I spent in its company.
