We Could Be Rats by Emily Austin

3.0

For a while, I forgot I was given an arc of this book and I’m really glad I remembered.

At first, I didn’t like how this book was structured. So different than what I expected from it, I think it worked really well; there were surprises here and there. The story’s short and simple, right in the vein of her previous works. I liked the way Austin handled the heavy topics in this book, with honesty and care. I empathize with Sigrid, suddenly flung from childhood to adulthood and not knowing what to do, and the way she tries to see the good in everything. I just wish we could have seen more in Margit’s perspective, or just dug deeper in each characters’ personalities. Either way, the book’s not bad the way it is.

The blurb states that this is a love letter to childhood and growing up, and I do agree.

Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the arc!
