Wayward by Dana Spiotta

Sam's life is a mess; ok, I can get onboard with a 50-something lady Going Through It. And there's a lot she's going through. But because she's a woke white woman with a white saviorism complex and a solid amount of discretionary income, nothing really sticks with her. She doesn't want to be married. She's mad about the election. Her mom has a terminal illness. Her daughter, well, everything with the daughter. Her friend does something terrible. Something terrible happens to Sam.

Then, the biggest moment, IMO. Sam witnesses police shoot an unarmed teenager 75% into the book. Sam was appropriately troubled by the shooting for a bit, but we moved on quite quickly. Sam! White lady! Do better!
