My Hero Academia, Vol. 1 by Kōhei Horikoshi
3.0

My Hero manga follows the anime to a tee...or I guess the anime follows the manga. But that's okay my Hero is a fun manga!

In this volume we get used to Deku. Just a kid with no powers trying to be the best he could be. Through various situations he proves you don't need powers to be a superhero. So...he gets powers and becomes a superhero. In a lot of ways the creator is obviously inspired by Superhero comics of the west and you can feel it. Deku and company are all fun characters and Deku himself with his Mentor All Might make a fun time with a lot of payoff since you always want them to push through.

But like the anime, the start is fairly typical shonen. Hero beats all odds, wins the day, becomes friends with everyone, and is a bit whiny. Luckily My Hero transforms a lot in the later seasons and I expect the manga to follow. Saying that the start is still good. A 3.5 out of 5.
