The Rising Tide by Ann Cleeves

5.0

A small island in the mist close to the Scottish border. A causeway inaccessible during the high tides. A murder among a group of friends who reunite every 5 years. The scene is perfectly set when Vera and her team comes in to investigate. The mystery is very well done, but in this installment a lot of emphasis is put on Vera herself and the changes in her mindset. She is a little softer, less demanding for both herself and her team. I could write a very long review pointing out all the choices that Mr. Cleeves makes that makes this series an prime example of perfection, but I will stick with the very strong recommendation to read the Vera Stanhope in order and be immersed in this very well crafted world set in Northumberland. This is without a doubt escapism and police procedural at its very best.
Bravo !
