The Hole by Pyun Hye-young

4.0

Evoking Herman Koch’s The Dinner and Stephen King’s Misery...

I haven't read the Dinner yet but I definitely get vibes of Misery. Only somehow this is even more desperate and hopeless.

Confined to the bed and left unable to move, with limited ways of communication, the protagonist has no one looking for him, no one to recognize the signs of mental and financial abuse that he is going through

I'd almost label this as more 'literary fiction' then 'horror', as it lacks classic horror elements
but the horror of lack of control, being completely reliant on someone who many not have your best interest in mind, the isolation and impending dread definitely qualifies as horror :)
Don't go in expecting a fast paced story or any extreme violence. It's a slow, internal struggle.

also fun fact from the agents website "The title of the novel is a play on words: a transliteration of the English word “hole,” 홀 (hol) is a Korean prefix meaning “alone” and most readily refers to one who is widowed." but that being said I will never forget about that hole in the garden
