The Devils
by Joe Abercrombie
DID NOT FINISH: 37%
It's a bad sign when I keep falling asleep after reading 2 pages of a book every night.
I'm really disappointed because I was excited to read a Joe Abercrombie stand-alone and hopefully love it, so I would be excited to start the First Law series, but I'm a little nervous now.
This read like a zany misfit suicide squad road trip in medieval Italy, which on its surface sounds awesome, but the execution was off to me. The characters were interesting and funny, and I even think there was some depth in their backstories, but it was one of those books where it feels like things are just happening. The characters get somewhere, they are told they have to do something, they go to a place and meet some big boss, fight them, then go to the next place. It felt like a video game honestly (that I would play!) but it wasn't keeping me interested. I don't care enough about the characters or world to just want to follow along and see how they react to new dangerous situations.
It's hard to explain because on the surface I like the idea of it, I just found myself wanting it to be over so I could start a new book I would like more, and that's my sign to DNF. I have 150 books on my to-read list, I'm not gonna waste 3 weeks of slogging through a book I'm gonna rate 3.5 stars.
I think I will keep First Law on my list to try because so many people love it, but at least I kind of know what to expect going into it now.
