I was a little hesitant to get pulled in to this one—it’s very solidly a middle grades book, IMHO. But it gets so so so good in the end.

Highly recommend for classroom libraries, for kids who love fantasy, for kids who are questioning the norms, for kids who see a dichotomy between how they’re being told they must be and what they feel is actually right for them. Only you can define you.

This novel gives powerful insight on the ambiguity, irrationality, and often destructive strictures of rigid rules, and equally powerful insight on the need to fight evil in any and every way it presents itself, in any and every way you can.
