Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell
3.0
Tricky to rate as a novel because I don't think it was originally intended to be one but was later pulled together. Generally quite gentle, fun reading with some very funny sly humour, but not much plot!
This is a book about women. In fact I think it's pretty unusual in how rarely men feature at all. Although Gaskell is taking the piss out of the women a bit, it's lovingly done, and what cuts through all the pettiness and ridiculous etiquette is that deep down they're all kind and generous souls who care about each other. Also they have multiple conversations about how vexing men are.
Overall an uplifting and pleasant read, but not particularly gripping.
